Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund drew 2-2 in Der Klassiker at the Allianz Arena, as Fabio Silva scored a late equaliser for Dortmund in the 89th minute after Harry Kane had missed a penalty.
This was Kane’s first appearance since winning the Ballon d’Or, and Bayern honoured him in Munich before kick-off. He made his own entrance, separate from the other players. The game itself turned into a nightmare for him in the second half.
With Bayern leading through Konrad Laimer‘s goal, Kane saw his penalty strike the crossbar. Serhou Guirassy then levelled the match in the 60th minute, after the Bayern striker had been dispossessed in the build-up. Kane’s assist for Dayot Upamecano‘s goal was not enough to save him.
Silva came off the bench to equalise for Niko Kovac‘s side. Lennart Karl then struck the crossbar with the last kick of a dramatic game, but Dortmund held on. The result leaves them level on points with Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga table.
A goal ruled out and a quick reply
Another Englishman, Jobe Bellingham, appeared to open the scoring after a mix-up involving Upamecano. A VAR check ruled the goal out, as it showed Carney Chukwuemeka colliding with the goalkeeper as Bellingham swept the ball home.
Bayern, who came into the match averaging over five goals per home game this season, made the most of their next chance. Michael Olise, who had earlier struck the post, sent Laimer through on goal, and the Austrian finished at the second attempt.
Dortmund’s leveller was a shock given Bayern’s dominance. Neat work by Guirassy created the opening, and Kane was left sweating. He looked to have spared his blushes with a key assist, but Silva’s intervention made it a night to forget for Bayern’s No 9.
Injuries and a demanding schedule
Bayern are going through a difficult period. They have a hectic schedule and are without their recovering head coach, Vincent Kompany, along with a growing injury list. Luis Diaz is already out, and Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry both went off injured in the first half.
Bayern may take some comfort from keeping their unbeaten record intact. However, this was an opportunity to open a gap on their great rivals. Silva’s strike, with a little help from Kane’s rare profligacy, means both sides’ records remain identical.
